In the Luxury, Lifestyle & Living section, Brandon Schultz’s Uptown Magazine Vivo article writer noted that Vivo Resorts, “has successfully combined the location’s authenticity with a luxury lifestyle on a 12-mile stretch of pristine beach just outside of town [Puerto Escondido].”
About Puerto Escondido
Puerto Escondido is a small surfing town of 45,000+ located on the Pacific Coast in the southern Mexico state of Oaxaca (pronounced wa-ha-ka).
This is authentic Mexico. The locals are warm and friendly, and live simply, yet this town has its own unique flair.
In the Uptown Magazine Vivo article, Schultz noted that Puerto Escondido, “Is a rare combination of true Mexican life bustling around a smattering of in-the-know travelers.”
Puerto Escondido, which literally means “hidden port,” is a place that so far, has really only been frequented mostly by pack packers and surf enthusiasts. In fact, the area’s famous Playa Zicatela beach is legendary. It is affectionately called the “Mexican Pipeline” by international surfers…and for good reason. CNN ranks Puerto Escondido at #8 on its list of the World’s 50 best surf locations.
Uptown Magazine Recommendations
The Uptown Magazine Vivo article noted that writer Brandon Schultz stayed at Vivo Resorts during his January visit to Puerto Escondido Mexico. Schultz offers the following recommendations:
Adoqúin Market – This is a very popular nightly market where vacationers can shop with local vendors and enjoy the many lively bars and restaurants along the strip.
Mercado Benito Juarez Market – As Puerto Escondido’s largest market, Mercado Benito Juarez mainly services the local community. It’s also a great place for taking colorful photos and to mix and mingle with the locals.
Surfing – You can watch pro surfers on the beaches of Playa Zicatela or Playa Carrizalillo. If you are a beginner, or if you want to try surfing lessons, head on over to the break at La Punta.
Bioluminescence at Laguna Manialtepec – Only occurring about 4 times a year, the Bioluminescence gives the nighttime waters “a sparkling glow when movement in the water triggers the phosphorescent algae.”
Baby Sea Turtle Release – Vivo Resorts offers an exceptional Sea Turtle Release Program that you can participate in (depending on the time of year). Custodians patrol the shorelines nightly and help to guard and protect nesting Leatherback and Olive Ridley sea turtles. The turtle eggs are then moved to a protected sanctuary until they hatch. Set up through the Vivo Foundations, the Sea Turtle Release Program has helped to dramatically improve the turtle survival rate (up from 1/1000 to 1/10)!
Although there are no major resort hotel chains and tourism is not yet the main industry here, Vivo Resorts is the one of the area’s biggest employers.
Vivo has always embraced the idea of being a good, contributing neighbor. The Vivo Foundation was created as a way to give back to the community. Along with the baby sea turtle release program, Vivo Foundation also offers support to the local orphanage and provides youth leadership programs through the local schools.
In his article, Schultz wrote, “We were touched by these moments, and grateful for the work Vivo contributes toward Puerto Escondido’s ecological and economic communities.”
The focus of Vivo Resorts, according to the Uptown Magazine Vivo article, is on, “individual, environmental, and community wellness.”
