On November 22, 2018, in a Sotheby’s article for Insight Magazine, Puerto Escondido was highlighted by writer Andrea Janis. She stated that Puerto Escondido is the new cultural hot spot of Mexico.
Puerto Escondido is also home to Vivo Resorts, a “new exclusive community of luxury condos” located on a 12-mile stretch of pristine beach, just outside of this “laid-back surfer-heaven small town.”
About Puerto Escondido
Puerto Escondido in Oaxaca, Mexico, is located on the southwestern Pacific coast. As Janis stated, the area is a “magnificent panorama of rugged mountains dotted with farms and villages” that “gives way to pristine beaches and jewel-toned waters of the aptly named Emerald Coast.”
With a population nearing 50,000, Puerto Escondido is well worth the 2-hour drive from Huatulco airport. You can also fly directly into Puerto Escondido airport via Mexico City. (See our Guide to Navigating Mexico City Like a Pro.)
There are so many great beaches in and around this surfing community. Playa Zicatela is a favorite of many world-class surfers but there are plenty of beaches for beginner surfers as well, such as Playa Carrizalillo. Puerto Escondido offers a quiet, laid back lifestyle that also attracts many North American snowbirds, expats, and sun-seekers who want to avoid other touristy Mexico vacation destinations.
In the article by Insight Magazine, Puerto Escondido is described as a town that “maintains a lively, yet relaxed, vibe.” The main market is Mercado Benito Juarez that offers an abundance of traditional Oaxacan wares including barro negro (black clay) pottery. You can also enjoy traditional Mexican cuisine plus try your hand at grinding spices into powder or corn into flour. At Los Telares (the Looms) you’ll find weavers making handcrafted textiles including woven table runners, blankets, and various articles of clothing.
About Vivo Resorts
Cary Mullen, a former world cup downhill ski champion and Olympian, is the mastermind behind Vivo Resorts. This private gated community has luxury condos for sale but they can also be rented through Vivo Vacations. There will eventually be over 600 luxury condo suites and 114 private villas, all with full kitchen and laundry facilities.
Vivo is a well-planned community and already has most amenities in place. Along with shuttle bus service to Puerto Escondido, Vivo also has two infinity pools (one with a swim-up bar) plus a Clubhouse with spa, gym, library, business center, and event space. As well, the on-site restaurant serves locally sourced farm-to-table cuisine. A shopping complex is in the long-range plans but the tennis and pickleball courts are now in use.
