The best time to go whale watching in Puerto Escondido Mexico is between mid December and February. Book your trip to see Humpback whales migrating off the shores on Oaxaca’s Emerald Coast!
The Oaxaca coast is a transit zone for many different whale species as they travel from their habitat in the Gulf of California to warmer seas further south. Along with Humpback whales, Orcas, Fin, Whale Sharks, and Grey whales are just a few of the different species that can be spotted migrating along the Pacific Coast of Southern Mexico. Whales migrate to the south Pacific coast of Mexico not only to find a mate, but also to birth their calves that were conceived here during the previous year. You may even see a few newly born calves swimming along with their mothers as they learn to swim and feed.
During mating season, it is not uncommon to see different species of whales breaching the surface of the warm Pacific waters which, along with singing, is one of their main courting rituals.
Oaxaca’s New Whale Watching Zone
Mexico’s Federal Secretariat of the Environment recently distinguished a New Whale Watching Zone which is a 280 sq km stretch just off the shores of Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca. The local president of the cooperative for whale watching in Puerto Escondido worked diligently with the Universidad del Mar (UMAR) to attain the zoning, which includes a series of regulations to promote the safe observation of migrating whales in the area.
Tourism boat captains will be required to take specific training to become certified and are required to keep boats a minimum of 60 meters distance from the migrating whales.
