6 Fun Activities in Puerto Escondido to Get You Started

Wondering what to do in Puerto Escondido?

The diverse terrain, warm weather, and authentic culture of Puerto Escondido, Mexico, offer a long list of potential activities. Depending on the length of your stay, you might not get to them all so here are 6 of the most commonly talked about options to get you started.

Fishing In Puerto Escondido

Big catch in Puerto Escondido

Venture out to the deep Pacific and experience the rush of reeling in sailfish, marlin, tuna, mahi-mahi and more…

Maximize your experience by hiring a local fishing guide, most of whom speak English and know the best spots to hit at different times of the day. Expect to pay somewhere between 600 – 800 pesos (30 – 42 USD) per hour for a boat with enough room for 4 guests.

The Vivo Resorts team can help arrange the excursion or you can head to Playa Principal and hire yourself a Captain.

Surfing In Puerto Escondido

Did you know Puerto Escondido has been called one of the world’s top 10 surfing destinations?

Depending on the beach and your level of expertise, you can find waves ranging between 1 and 10 feet tall.

Zicatela Beach in Puerto Escondido attracts some of the world’s top surfers and is a spectacular setting for spectators. Consider taking in one of the annual competitions in Puerto Escondido.

Perfect for beginners, Playa Carrizalillo is where our in-house lifeguard and surf instructor, Tito, helps transform our many Vivo homeowners and international guests into surfers. Check out Tito’s Instagram page for inspiration.

Zipline Adventures

Venture to the mountains of Oaxaca and experience nature from a whole new perspective. Get a birds-eye view of the fauna below and cap it off with a visit to a hidden waterfall.  Make sure to bring your swimming gear as you’ll inevitably be tempted to cool off.

This adventure does require some hiking but the guides are happy to share their knowledge of the area and point out the wildlife that might otherwise go unnoticed.

Coffee, Coffee, Coffee

For coffee fanatics, visit Bi Nisa Cafe and indulge in the perfect combination of treats and caffeinated bliss. In addition, they offer a quick tutorial on the coffee bean roasting process and you might even get the chance to snap a few photos while you give it a try.

Be warned, you may find it hard to walk out of there without purchasing a bag or two of coffee to take home and share with friends so make sure to bring a backpack.

Laguna Manialtepec

Ignite your senses with the sights and sounds of Laguna de Manialtepec.

Expect two completely different experiences depending on the time of day you visit.

Visit in the morning enjoy the pleasant warmth and light breeze in your face while being serenaded by the endless species of birds lining the shores. You might see anything from parrots and pelicans to kingfishers, Ibises, falcons, and herons.

For a completely different experience visit Laguna de Manialtepec during the evening and see the water come alive with bioluminescence. Plankton in the water illuminates your surroundings with neon colors you won’t believe until you see.

Fall in Love with the Turtles

Left to fend for themselves in nests along the Oaxacan beaches, turtle eggs are defenseless against predators. Thanks to the work of Dr. Marcelino Lopez and the Palmarito Sea Turtle Rescue program, as many as 40,000 – 60,000 eggs are recovered, nurtured and released every year.

In collaboration with the Palmarito Sea Turtle Rescue, Vivo Resorts hosts turtle releases where guests can learn about these magnificent creatures and cheer them on as they wade into the surf for the very first time.
