In her May 10, 2018 destination insights article for CNN Travel (under Best Beaches), writer Susannah Rigg explored some of the best things to do in Puerto Escondido, which is located on the Pacific Coast of Oaxaca in southern Mexico.

In the CNN Travel article, Rigg called Puerto Escondido a, “hidden treasure worth discovering,” adding that for the most part it has, “remained under the mainstream tourism radar for years (but is still) a firm favorite with surfers and backpackers.”

Best Surfing in Puerto Escondido

Surfing is definitely one of the best things to do in Puerto Escondido. In fact, according to CNN Travel, Puerto Escondido is rated #8 in the world! If you are a beginner you can find calmer waves and take surfing lessons at Carrizalillo beach with some of the many local surfing professionals. For experienced surfers, there are a number of nearby surfing beaches where you can find the waves you are looking for including La Punta beach and Zicatela beach.

Enjoy the turquoise waters of Playa Carrizalillo, a horseshoe-shaped isolated beach where you can relax on shaded sunbeds and drink fresh coconut water. Another favorite place for family swimming and body boarding is Playa Principal.

Local dining establishments like Cafecito on Zicatela, Finca las Nieves, El Espadin Restaurant, and El Coste Cevichería are among some of the favorites for locals and international guests alike.

Best Accommodations in Puerto Escondido

Part of the appeal of Puerto Escondido, Mexico is that other than Vivo Resorts located on Palmarito Beach, there are no big brand resort hotels in the area. Most of the accommodations, as Rigg’s CNN Travel article states, are “Cozy cabanas and small, sweet lodgings.”
