About the City

Puerto Escondido is a port city and tourist center in Oaxaca. Thousands from around the world flock to the city to enjoy the beautiful beaches, championship surfing and backpacking. Avenida Perez Gasga is the heart of the city; this area is lively with corner stores, cafes, specialty shops and bars.  

 

About the State

Oaxaca is one of 31 states in Mexico. It is located in the southern part of the country west of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. The state is bordered by Guerrero, Puebla, Veracruz, Chiapas and the Pacific. The state is historically home to the Zapotec and Mixtec and thus contains more speakers of indigenous languages than any other Mexican state. Native crafts are often found throughout the state, including production of alebrijes, weaving and black clay items.

Recreation

There are two main beaches in addition to many smaller ones: Playa Principal and Playa Zicatela.  These beaches have fine sands and moderate surf.  Boaters can also view porpoises and turtles along the inaccessible beaches. Beginning at Playa Principal is also the Sueno Posible Sea Walk, which follows the rocky oceanside. Puerto Escondido is best known for deep-sea fishing and surfing with a famous surf break at Playa Zicatela. Puerto Escondido also offers something for everyone with activities including horseback riding along the beach, surf fishing, boogie boarding, surfing, eco tours, kayaking, bird watching and more.
