Lowe Now Calls Mexico Home Part-time
In a Sportskeeda interview for the Ice Hockey section of the June 25, 2018 edition of this online sports magazine, writer Darren Paltrowitz sits down with hockey legend Kevin Lowe.
Lowe is still enjoying his 40-year career with the NHL and now, as a consultant for Vivo Resorts Oaxacan Beachfront Living in Puerto Escondido, he calls Mexico his “part-time” home.
Lowe In the NHL
In 1979, hockey great Kevin Lowe became the Edmonton Oilers first ever draft pick. Lowe scored the team’s first ever NHL goal with an assist by Wayne Gretsky (Gretsky’s first NHL point!).
As one of the best defensemen in the league, Lowe played 1254 regaular season games and 214 playoff hockey games in his 19 years as an NHL player. His accomplishments include 5 Stanley Cups with the Oilers, another Stanly Cup with New York Rangers, 7 NHL all-star games, and he won the King Clancy Memorial Trophy in 1990.
Kevin Lowe eventually became the Edmonton Oiler’s head coach and then general manager, before moving on to become vice-chairman of the Oilers Entertainment Group.
Consulting for Vivo Resorts
Founded by Canadian developer Cary Mullen, a former pro athelete, World Cup downhill ski champion, and two-time Olympian, Vivo Resorts is a luxury, gated, beachfront community resort on Palmarito Beach. Vivo Resorts Oaxacan Beachfront Living is located just outside of Puerto Escondido on the Emerald Coast of the state of Oaxaca in southern Mexico.
Kevin Lowe’s friendship with Cary Mullen pre-dates the development of Vivo Resorts. They both met through Lowe’s wife Karen Percy, who was also a professional Canadian alpine skier and bronze medal winner at the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics.
As vice-chairman of the Oilers Entertainment Group, Lowe is actively involved on the buisness side of things according to the Sportskeed interview. Lowe’s involvement ranges from operations and public relations to developing business strategies for continued growth. These are valuable skills that Lowe also brings to table in his role as consultant to Vivo Resorts.
About Puerto Escondido
In his Sportskeeda interview, Lowe had this to say about Puerto Escondido. “Weather-driven, affordability-driven, proximity-driven,” there are “a lot of metrics that are exciting about that area,” adding, “I always knew that I’m not going to spend my entire life in the cold.” Lowe says he has “…a lot of respect for Cary’s story and history.”
Lowe also stated he has, “A great appreciation for the people (of Mexico)…certainly the climate…it’s such a beautiful country.” He loves Puerto Escondido’s beaufitul open market and Zicatela Beach (located right in the heart of town).
“That’s the thing we really like about Vivo,” says Lowe, “…the kids probably love it there more than my wife and I do, which is hard to believe…we see it as a place where we can congregate together in the future.”
